I never knew there was a blue poppy, actually when you first hear it it sounds almost like an oxzy moron. I think that we just naturally associate poppie with red. However, once I saw a picture of the Himalayan Blue poppy that association went out the window. Blue accentuates the lines and textures in the poppy. Here after when I hear poppy I will forever think of the blue beauty.

This is my very first palatte knife painting. I find it a little intimidating to work this way bc my comfort level with control is greatly limited but at the same time the experience is so freeing and it requires you to live in the here and now. Nothing more than a thought is required and it is instantly translated on to the canvas. It is so mind clearing and it gives me more room to expand on the next thought, the next vision. I guess you could say that what blue does for a poppy, palatte painting does for me.

I have started a new line entitled Mattie Bunnlees. The name has a story of course but you know how it goes I could tell you but....lol

Each of the bunnlees are needle felted utilizing both wool and polyester (core). Even the eyes are needle felted to capture the individual expressions. They are presently available on ETSY

Please note: all bunnlees wear false eyelashes but they don't like to talk about it!

KiKi and the DiSturBing  Surprise...

KiKi and the disturbing Surprise
by Alma Lee
original, One of a Kind
Felted Wool Sculpture
10x11"(including the tail)

Splish Splash
rub a dub dub
What I thought was a spider
turned out to be aLady Bug
Ki Ki is in the middle of washing up and along came a Lady Bug. Well at least that is something like the saying goes. This is felted freehand with both polyester and wool roving. This is not intended as a toy.

WHAT IS NEEDLE FELTING: Needle felt is the process of interlocking, binding and compacting wool fibers and is achieved by repeatedly poking on and through the fibers with a specialized needle. The final form is shaped on the fly with varying depths and angles of the barbed needle until the desired form is completed. It differs in Wet felting in that no water is used in the process. Designed as I go along, making it truly unique and original.

Alma Lee's is back: New 3D Felted characters from Cube-a-Kitty and K9.5

Hello to all!

I am BACK! I've had some questions as to why I fell off the map was last 3 months. I was having some health issues, and my doctors had a hard time figuring out what was going on. Long story short, my heart had an undiagnosed, congenital defect .. My heart, started to fail, refused to pump enough blood to my extremities. I was taken out of commission literally. While this was going on we were in the process of building my first studio not in my house. It has been affectionately named She Shack Studios. Needless to say it is behind schedule but still in the works.  God is good, and he kept me going and now I have since received a pacemaker and almost overnight I was a new woman it has proved to be a life changing experience. So that being said I had a great deal of time to pick a new creative direction, without abandoning my current brands and style.

I had been waiting anxiously to put these out to auction. If you are a Cube–a–Kitty, or  K9.5 fan then you are going to love my new felted sculptures of various feline and canine characters. These sculptures are achieved by needle felting into uns-pun wall with a tiny barbed needle. This adheres the wool fibers to gather into tight solid shapes. These are one of a kind originals. Because I design and sculp, as I go there will never be 2 alike. I hope you are excited as I am about this new venture. I have placed several of them on auction on eBay. So lets take a look here is the link:  http://www.ebay.com/cln/classickeepsakes49/FELTED-CUBE-A-KITTY-AND-FRIENDS/123751208014

Look for more characters up-and-coming in the very near future. Also suspect other woolen treasures from me including; 1 of a kind scarves, shawls, curses, and the old fashion, hand pulled wet felted hats in a new retro style.

I think all of you for your patronage, prayers, and good wishes. They truly do help. And please don't hesitate to let me know what you think about these new lines. God bless Alma Lee

WHY BUY DIGITAL ART?
As an artist I have evolved once again with the additional of digital painting / drawing to my repertoire of artistic mediums. I did this because of the worlds it opens to me as an artist. It adds avenue and venues not previous available to me. It also makes more things possible than ever before as I try to convey my artistic expression.
Shone here on the left is the original illustration done digitally next to my bast attempt to duplicate it by hand illustration in color pencil.  Though I think both "work" the hand drawing lacks some of the mystery, mood and movement of the original digital.

The 1st thing that I noticed when incorporating this particular medium is a general confusion and lack of trust leading to the devaluing status of my digital  art product in general. Art collectors and patrons buy art for several reasons; art gives them an expression of themselves, of their thoughts.ideas and feelings that they had difficulty expressing verbally or otherwise during the course of their lives. Another reason they purchase art is to improve their quality of life. Art adds beauty and truth to their living spaces as well as their lives. It allows them to take a break from busyness and contemplate what lies beyond their personal realm or geographic place into the world beyond. They look at art and they see a reflection of their personality, of their successes, other feelings and an awareness of the vastness of life beyond them, perhaps just out of their reach but not beyond their scope. It opens thier children's minds to curiosity and creativity and afford them a safe platform that open dialogue with the adults as well as children that surround them.

So that said why should we as a society by digital art? The simple answer would be because it is art. Digital art requires all of the creativity all of the imagination, skill andy technique prow less that are employed in traditional art. It might surprise some people that it is often more laborious than traditional mediums. The problem seems to be that people do not want to invest in an art form that at 1st glance has no originals. Why buy a digital art rather than a print of traditional art? According to economist.com citing a report entitled profit or pleasure? Exploring the motivations behind treasure trends. Of those questioned only a 10th asked said they bought art purely as an investment where as 75% cited enjoyment as the key. In both traditional medium and digital medium, collectors have always been advised to buy what they love. We are facing a glut of images in the marketplace these days it is on our TV sets,  our walls, our bathrooms, kitchen and living areas have become galleries displaying art both good and bad. The world without
art would not be a blank canvas but a dark chasm of void. To prevent that from happening, you must to focus in on what you love.Buy and enjoy it for all your life.

The reason why digital art so important in this present age is the avenues of expression that it opens up for our artists. There are techniques, blends, even mixed media, (otherwise incompatible) made possible with digital media. It is akin to the comparison of analog TV vs high definition. You will watch your favorite programs in either bc it is your favorite program.  Digital art does not devalue traditional art instead enhances and enlarges it and it's audience. The modern day digital artist must be connected not only to the world at large and its future visions, forms and possiblities, but also past techniques, nuances of the traditional art that came before it. All artists need to perfect, hone their skills. their techniques, expressions everything connected to the work style and subject. Digital art gives us the opportunity to take that 1,  step further to elaborate on the original concept. To attempt to answer the questions that the art itself poses and to carry the viewer deeper into our world and it's glorious intricacies.

Personally I am in a continual love affair with both traditional art and digital art for the reasons mentioned above. But at this juncture in my art career I am cognizant of there are only so many paintings left for me to do with an ever shortening time frame.  The pure physicality of traditional art has at times excluded me from its practice. When I started out I painted furniture, and I loved it. I exclaimed to all of my family and friends that this and this alone would be my endeavor for life. Unfortunately arthritis said otherwise.  I do not believe that I am alone there are many artists that are faced with the wisdom and direction and the quality of technique and vision for art and its creation only to realize that their bodies and the passing of time works against them like never before.

Now as a collector and patron, the value of digital art is a huge gray area. I dispute the statement that digital art has no originals. Its original lies inside the mind and the heart of the artist and every piece the artist sells requires the relinquishing of  a fragment of their very soul. Many artists are working now in very limited editions for their digital art this entails a rise in price. This seems logical to me. However inevitably, we are faced with the question why should I buy digital art and pay a greater price for it than print. The answer lies in the patrons sensibilities, desires and love of the art itself. Digital art well inevitably come into its own, probably sooner than later as it is not going away. It's perception can only improve. I think it is safe to say to that there will continue to be more and more of it in all styles and genres' in the future. So we are back to the collectors, patrons, the lovers of art, the best advice stil is love it or leave it to someone who will. Like all art the return on your investment economically is set somewhere further along on the timeline. Therefore the astute investor is timely, bold, addicted, committed and motivated purely by the love of art and it's practioners.

While researching this article I read several question and answer message boards with opinions lying on both sides. I was forever going back to the various search engines and typing "why should we buy digital art as opposed to traditional art"And what came up every time was "why by art" with no differential to digital. So if you are an art buyer, investor, collector or lover, you will buy digital art because it is ART. I will conclude this with a quote from wiki answers.com the question posed there was why is digital art important? The answer it is important because it is a new generation of the world.

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

This is another scene from an exquisite dream I had some months ago.
There seems to be much debate about hell.  But I think that all would agree IF it does exist we don't want to go there.  Personally I don't care if it does or doesn't exist, I have no wish to squander my time or energy debating. Because I believe it is a choice...really, just the natural outgrowth of the core of our being. It is the contents of our heart poured out onto fruition. More than morals or the lack there of, more than good deeds/bad deeds, no us and them. It is comprised of all you hold dear, and that which you cling too, rely on, trust.  You choose your way and therein lies your fate.  Thus this art came about based on that belief. No one chooses hell, and as you see here all of us will  literally leap in after their hearts desire, not understanding the scope of the existence we ourselves have created in a world we must now inhabit eternally.

There by the grace of God go I.

Somewhere a child dreams
of the happy years
What shall I be, who shall
love me

Years later on a squalid
pad
a child gives what she
never had

now a child screams
crying falls upon deaf ears
What have I come to
where is the love
I never knew

Alone she wonders
how it would be
if she were home
at once joyful and free...

Human Trafficking is a subject close to my heart. I had never heard of it until a few years ago, then I watched the movie "Human Trafficking" with Donald Sutherland and was struck by how easily even the smart and savvy among us are taken in by these thugs. I knew that I in my younger days would have succumbed also. It is heartbreaking. This are was inspired by that movie it has been years since I have seen it but I will never be able to forget it.

Joan of Arc: Living the Controversial Truth

As a child I was told about Joan of Arc, in fact I a remember watching a movie about her.  But being a non Catholic her story was treated as a myth within my circles.  I always wondered about it. Now after some research I believe in the myth no longer but espouse it's truth.  I believe that she was so far out of the mainstream, the religious norms, and so little influenced by it that they had no control over her.  Indeed it goes without saying she loved God, but I believe she did indeed receive visions from him. She saw a portion of how big he is, today we would say she lived outside the box. As for her veneration of her as a saint...I am not so inclined but I so respect her ability to live out who she was, come what may, Love the most hated lover of all time,  without regard to the boxed up, down pat God so popular then (and now) and in the end be able to say "I have run the good race and lost none of myself, I gave my life and it was given back to me."  And I think quite possibly she would add "no regrets"

Joan of Arc was illustrated  in Poser, and CS6.

Dancing with Fire

She dances wildly
and sings the same
hell hath no power ov'r me
it's licking flames, shan't hold me
nor my body claim...

so it was as she declared
hell needn't hold her
dancing as she dare
her passions was the consuming fire
leaving her nothing , but her bones bare.

Dancing with Fire was illustrated digitally in Poser, and CS6.

Unknown Super-Wife

Able to clean dwellings
in a single bound
a window, a toilet
the sink and tub surround

You won't see her coming
but you will know where's
she been
Call if you like,
but her presense is not
something on which you can depend!

The unknown Superwife: Contessa of Clean is every house keepers dream.  Armed with inspiration she recruits at random in the wee wee hours.Minions succumb to her bidding. Her warp the minds of believers making them complacent and submissive to her sanitary ways. Then it happens, Voila! Your house is pristine sparkling and clean. The praises soon follow, as you wallow, you wonder at your confusion, and wishful thinking. Was that  dust bunny? Then you wake up and realize it was but a dream. So you put on your big girl panties and pick up you broom!

This art was created in CS 6 and it is a digital illustration, photo were used as reference only.

The Usual Suspects by Alma Lee by Alma Lee

It is the same time after time, and you know who you are. We are closing in.  This is the first in my unknown series.  So many times in everyday life we feel un known until we do something wrong and suddenly everyone know who we are.  That is the idea behind this series.  Bringing to light all the good  things that we try to do that go unoticed...talk about unnoticed I off to clean the bathroom.

The Usual Suspects

Two things have occupied my art these past few weeks.  I decided (late I might add)to Take up the 29 faces art challenge  and starting up a new series call PuffyButtons. It has been challenging to say the least, and on one personal note, I have lost another of my muses during this time (Tripper see below)suddenly to a rare and extremely aggressive cancer that none of us knew. She was diagnosed one day and died on the operating table the next. Our hearts are broken and thus keeping busy with art has been a must! So back to the challenge and new series, lucky for me they tend to over lap otherwise you might have to look me up in a rubberroom somewhere! So I thought that I would share some the progress on these projects here.
From the PuffyButtons here are Days 6,7, and 8.
